Using Photo Albums for Speech and Language Development

A simple photo album can really help stimulate your child’s speech and language development. Here’s how to get your photo book up and running.

Keep an eye out in the €2 stores for cheap and cheerful photo albums! The reason I say this is because infants/toddlers love to pull and tear!

Using photo albums for language development

Get a photo album with just two 6×4- size photos side by side. Less is more when it comes to learning language. When there’s too much going on, children can’t focus as well!

Fill the first few pages with familiar people. One person per photo. Take photos of grandparents, family members and anyone else your child sees on a regular basis. Have fun naming and pointing to the photos. Incorporate some actions….give nana a kiss!

Fill the next section with familiar nouns. Your child’s favourite ball, book, doll, toy etc.  This will help build your child’s understanding of early first words.

Fill the next section with photos of your child doing familiar actions…..smiling, sleeping, swinging, eating, drinking. This exposes your child to early action words!

Whilst it might take a bit of time to get together, I have had lots of success with something so simple! Give it a try and let me know how you get on.
